Did you notice the pack of teens that just skirted by? One of the earlier clothing styles in hip hop was the sportswear coupled with conspicuous jewelry which became the signature look for old school rap. Tracksuits, bomber jackets, berets, Doc Martens, and sneakers were some of the common apparel then. Men sported gold chains while women wore large gold earrings. The sports apparel of Adidas, Nike, and Le Coq Sportif were some of the commonly patronized brands in the 1980s. The 1990s saw the growing popularity of more sportswear from Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY, Polo, Calvin Klein, and Nautica. This particular fashion style became known as the urban streetwear and was further supplied by such brands as FUBU, Ecko Unlimited, Walker Wear, and Boss Jeans.

The emergence of gangsta rap as a sub-genre of hip hop fueled another fashion statement, this time inspired by the clothing styles of street thugs and prison inmates. Gangsta rappers started wearing baggy pants, bandannas, and tattoos. Not a few conservatives reacted negatively to the sagging pants and low-hanging waistlines. A religious group tried to combat the fashion style by giving out belts while others sought to make it illegal.

Other hip hop personalities opted for the classy gangster look and wore double-breasted suits, bowler hats, silk shirts, and alligator-skin shoes. This Mafioso-inspired image was popularized by the Notorious B.I.G. and Sean Combs a.k.a. Diddy, with the latter becoming known as the Shiny Suit Man.

Recent trends in hip hop apparel show the influence of hipster and preppy styles. Oversized shirts were replaced with tighter-fitting short-sleeved shirts, tracksuits were traded for sports coats, and tighter denims were favored over sagging jeans. Some of the popular accessories are large belt buckles and skull and skeleton ornaments. Decorated hoodies, fitted caps, and trucker hats are also commonly worn.

Heavy jewelry has also become an enduring mark of hip hop fashion, symbolizing an ostentatious display of fame and wealth. Known in hip hop slang as bling bling, these flashy accessories became ubiquitous fashion icons and common semiotic elements in a lot of music videos. Gold jewelry was the craze in the 80s but it was eventually edged out by silver and platinum. Grills or removable metal teeth coverings also became popular among celebrities.

With the development of hip hop fashion, rap artists eventually ventured into the clothing business and started producing their own labels. The rap group Wu-Tang Clan has its Wu-Wear, Damon Dash and Jay-Z have Rocawear, and Diddy has Sean John. Diddy also bagged the 2003 Menswear Designer of the Year Award given by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Other hip hop personalities with their own clothing lines are Eminem, 50 Cent, Russell Simmons, Kimora Lee Simmons, and OutKast.

The thing is, the club where this event was held has an exceedingly strict no-hip-hop policy. Its dress code reads as follows: “No White T-Shirts; No Shirts Below Pants Pockets; No Shorts Below Top of Calf; No Exposed Necklaces on Men;  my frat brother owns a club and he has some of the same policies, cause when he opened it without a dress code young cats came in and tore it up, so the dress code limits the trouble so the people that paid to have a good time.

My dad came up in the “Happy Days” years when slicked back pompadours and cigarette packs rolled up in T-shirt sleeves were the rage. Coupled with the early days of rock and roll – “the devil’s music” – my dad’s generation was accused by his dad’s generation, of nothing less than representing the eventual destruction of mankind.

I came up on the tail end of the “hippie” generation. Known for free love, mind altering substances, long hair (on men) and rock & roll (the “devil’s” music). It was a great time to grow up, but I still remember the look of confusion and dismay on the “old folks” when a static scratched Purple Haze blared out of the AM radio speakers as my shoulder length hair shook to the beat. That was, of course, back when I had hair.

Nowadays, when I walk down the street or through the mall, I gawk in amazement at the current generations’ fixation on saggy pants. How these things stay up when the waist band is at thigh level or below is, to me, something that defies gravity and decorum. They say we all eventually become our parents. I guess it’s true!

As a long time guitar player who still climbs on stage every weekend to play the “devil’s music”, I have also had a fixation on a trend over the last couple of decades, with guitar players that wear their guitars slung low.

This is one that I’ve never figured out. Always trying hard to remain an open minded Baby Boomer, when I see a guitarist hunched over forward and shredding a guitar at knee level, I still walk away baffled.

Although this low slung guitar trend has apparently continued to perpetuate as a fashion statement, because it “looks cool”, my confusion has less to do with fashion than it does physics. I just can’t fathom “how” you can physically play a guitar at that angle.

A large part of guitar playing technique comes from the wrist. String bends, barre chords and finger movements are all supported by a wrist that is able to pivot at a comfortable angle.

When a guitar is slung low, the only way to approach the neck is with the wrist bent at what, to me, seems to be an un-natural angle. The more severe the angle of the wrist, the more diminished is the wrist’s ability to apply a sufficient amount of pressure. When the natural plane of the lower arm, to the wrist, to the hand, to the fingers is broken, the less control the guitarist has to perform intricate maneuvers on the fret board.

Of course, it’s all a matter of what you get used to. I have been invited to sit in with bands over the years, and have been handed guitars with straps in the “low slung” position and tried to play them. Although, for the guitar player whose axe I was using, it was a perfectly comfortable position – for me it just doesn’t work.

My generation of guitar players included legends like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughn. All who played guitars at waist level and up, so that’s naturally how I learned to play.

In fact, I am a “slung high” guitarist. I wear my guitar up at about chest level. It’s just a natural position for me, although I have taken some ribbing from other musicians about it! To some “low slung” guitarists I must look like the high school nerd with pants pulled high in a buttoned down short sleeve shirt with a pocket protector.

Now that my generation has gone from cool and hip – to aching hips – I try to always be conscious of the fact that there are new things that will come out of the younger generations that I may not totally understand, but that doesn’t necessarily make them bad.

Although I want to pull some of these “low slung” guitarists off to the side and say, “hey, just try it this way. Give your wrist a break and see how much raising the height of you guitar will improve you ability to play”, I refrain.

The beauty of playing music and being a musician is that we are all different, which allows us all to express ourselves in our own way. What works for one may not work for another, and you know what, that’s okay.

My biggest fear though, is that the trend continues on even further. The vision of a guitar player playing a low slung (to the floor) guitar, and, wearing saggy drooping pants, might give a whole new meaning to a “crack” problem.

Lad Musician burst onto the Tokyo fashion scene in 1995 in a glam-rock/low-slung-guitar kind of way, espousing an emaciated, tragic sexiness enhanced by clinging silhouetted tops and slim, revealing pants with no pockets and very little breathing space. Young men will combine these tops with baggy jeans that are suspended 8 centimeters below the navel on terrifically flat stomachs, subconsciously channeling, perhaps, the Kate Moss look of the late 1990s.

Like the musical genres that came before it, punk rock generated a subculture and spawned several other sub-genres of music. Today, punk rock T-shirts, Oi! gothic clothing, and emo bondage clothing are still widely worn, each reflecting the more encompassing punk rock attitude or the more specific sub-genre. Punk rock songs are characterized by bare instrumentation, hard-hitting lyrics with themes that are nihilistic or extremely political, and fast tempos.

Punk rockers encompass not only those who play the music, but also those who identify with and live the punk rock lifestyle. Punk rockers share attitudes of self-reliance, rejection of the mainstream, and progressive or liberal political leanings. They are less likely to engage in activities for person gain and are more likely to focus their efforts on change for the greater good. Punk rockers are also widely known for their creative fashion statements. Punk rock T-shirts often have outrageous images on them, and punks often use tape and safety pins to hold together torn garments. Likewise, they employ a variety of nontraditional items as jewelry, such as safety pins and razor blades, and often have extreme hairstyles and colors.

Oi!, a punk genre, generally draws from the working class. Oi! gothic clothing is popular, as is the Doc Marten and Levi look. Another genre of punk, emo, is short for emotive hardcore or emotional hardcore. Emo bondage clothing has a distinctive style that is designed to shock the status quo with its use of leather, rubber, and latex. Since the 1970s, punk rock has experienced both hills and valleys.

After becoming a phenomenon in the mid-1970s, by the end of the decade bands like The Go-Go’s become popular with the mainstream. Punk then seemed to morph into New Wave, with the Talking Heads, Devo, and The Police emerging on the scene. In the 1980s, punk’s progeny, alternative rock and emo, took hold, while the 1990s saw the dawn of riot grrrl and queercore. In the past decade, punk has again entered the mainstream – to the consternation of traditionalists who view commercial success as the antithesis of the punk philosophy. While battles over capitalist philosophy and musical style rage on, those living the punk lifestyle continue to express themselves through punk rock T-shirts, Oi! gothic, and emo bondage clothing.

Another version is the Jimmy Page Les Paul limited edition – this double-neck guitar’s fretboards are made from rosewood. There are 20 frets with split-parallelogram inlays. First double neck Gibson guitars (the EDS-1275) were produced in 1958. In 1962, the design was changed to the SG body style. In 1968, they stopped production of the EDS-1275, but it was restarted again in 1977, but the line was discontinued in 1990. This popular double-neck Gibson was made with a cherry finish, tobacco burst, and ebony with chrome or gold hardware and alpine white with gold hardware.

In 2004, Gibson began working with Jimmy Page to create a replica of the famous EDS-1275 SG double-neck guitar. There are a limited number with his signature on one of the necks. There are also additional replicas created by Page and Gibson – these do not have his signature on them, but do come with a certificate of authenticity.

An interesting variation by Gibson is a double-neck mandolin, the EMS-1235. This was in production from 1958 through 1968 and even though it is called a mandolin, it was really a double cutaway. The top neck is shorter and tuned one octave higher than the standard pitch. This guitar had one-piece mahogany necks and rosewood fingerboards. Both necks were six-string ones and used thinline hollow bodies until 1961. In 1962, they changed to the SG style and were in production until 1968, when production was stopped.

And the last example of double neck Gibson guitars is the Gibson EBS-1250, which was in production from 1962 to 1970. This one was a bass/lead guitar – the top neck is a bass (four strings) and the bottom neck is a six-string guitar.

1. The Buyer – Who is buying the guitar will play a major role in how much you get for the guitar. Is it a collector? If so, they may actually be willing to buy the guitar at a premium (more than it’s worth) because they intend to hang on to it and let it appreciate. Is the buyer a reseller? In this case, the buyer will be trying to pay you the absolute lowest amount because they immediately intend to sell the guitar for a profit. Be careful in this scenario, as the buyer may take advantage of your ignorance of guitar values. Arm yourself with as much information as you can.

2. The Condition – Obviously, the condition of anything you’re selling plays a role in how much money you get. Be aware that a buyer interested in an older or vintage guitar will be particularly fussing about the condition of the guitar. Also, if the guitar has had any modifications,
expect the value to decrease significantly.

3. The Number – How many of this particular guitar were made? If it was a million, expect value to be lower because supply is so high. If it’s an original Gibson Explorer and there are less than 100 in existence, expect the price tag to be in the hundreds of thousands. Your guitar probably falls in the middle somewhere, but knowing how many of your particular guitar came off the assembly line will help you determine it’s value.

At the end of the day, no website or guide can tell you exactly what your guitar is worth, but by knowing these three factors you’ll be better educated.

At the end of the day, how much is your guitar worth? Only as much as a buyer is willing to pay you.

Heidi Klum Guitar Hero

Their has recently been a controversial advertisement with model Heidi Klum playing Guitar Hero in her undergarments! The games support individual play as well as cooperative and competitive modes for two players. The series has used a range of both licensed and independent rock music tracks from the 1960s, throughout the decades to the present, including many master tracks from the bands. In total, six games have been released for video game consoles. Games have also been released for mobile phones and the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system.

History

The series was originally developed by Harmonix Music Systems from 2005 to 2007. Then development duties of the series were transferred to Neversoft, whose first effort, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was released on October 28, 2007 in North America.

The Guitar Hero franchise has become a cultural phenomenon, making many appearances in popular culture, and the games have become extremely popular as party games and hobbies. The series has sold 23 million units, earning $1.6 billion in retail sales.

Guitar Controller

Guitar Hero is unusual because it comes packaged with a controller peripheral modeled after a black Gibson SG guitar. Rather than a typical gamepad. This guitar controller is the primary input for the game. Playing the game with the guitar controller simulates playing an actual guitar, except it uses five colored “fret buttons” and a “strum bar” instead of frets and strings. The development of Guitar Hero was inspired by Konami’s GuitarFreaks arcade game, which at the time, had not seen much exposure in the North American market; RedOctane, already selling guitar-shaped controllers for imported copies of GuitarFreaks, approached Harmonix about creating a game to use an entirely new Guitar controller.

The concept was to have the gameplay of Amplitude with the visuals of Karaoke Revolution, both of which had been developed by Harmonix. The game was met with critical acclaim and received numerous awards for its innovative guitar peripheral and its soundtrack, which comprised 47 playable rock songs (most of which were cover versions of popular songs from artists and bands from the 1960s through modern rock). Guitar Hero has sold nearly 1.5 million copies to date.

Guitar Hero II Release

The popularity of the series increased dramatically with the release of Guitar Hero II for the PlayStation 2 in 2006. Featuring improved multiplayer gameplay, an improved note-recognizing system, and 64 songs, it became the fifth best-selling video game of 2006. The PlayStation 2 version of the game was offered both separately and in a bundle with a cherry red Gibson SG guitar controller. Guitar Hero II was later released for the Xbox 360 in April 2007 with an exclusive Gibson X-Plorer guitar controller and an additional 10 songs, among other features. About 3 million units of Guitar Hero II have sold on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.

The final game in the Guitar Hero series to be developed by Harmonix was Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s for the PlayStation 2, which was released in July 2007. This final game version, changing the visuals from Guita 1ff8 r Hero II, and shortening the song list with no bonus songs was not as well received by reviewers.

Transition

Transition Both RedOctane and Harmonix were experiencing changes in 2006. RedOctane was bought by Activision in June while it was announced in September that Harmonix would be purchased by MTV Networks. As a result of the two purchases, Harmonix would no longer develop future games in the Guitar Hero series. Instead, developing would go to Neversoft, a subsidiary of Activision known for developing the Tony Hawk’s series of skateboarding games.

Neversoft

Neversoft was chosen to helm the Guitar Hero series after Neversoft founder, Joel Jewett, admitted to the RedOctane founders, Kai and Charles Huang, that his development team for Tony Hawk’s Project 8 went to work on weekends just to play Guitar Hero. In 2007, Harmonix and MTV Games released a new music title through rival publisher Electronic Arts, called Rock Band. It expanded upon the gameplay popularized by the Guitar Hero series by adding drum and microphone instruments, allowing players to simulate playing songs as bands, though this functionality has now been implemented in Guitar Hero World Tour.

Guitar Hero III:

Legends of Rock was released in late 2007 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and Mac platforms. The title is the first installment of the series to include wireless guitars bundled with the game and also the first to release a special bundle with two guitars. The game includes Slash and Tom Morello as playable characters in addition to the existing fictional avatars; both guitarists performed motion capture to be used for their characters animation in the game.

Guitar Hero III World Tour (aka Guitar Hero IV)

Guitar Hero World Tour, previously named Guitar Hero IV, is the fourth full game in the series and was released on October 26, 2008 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. Analysts had expected that future Guitar Hero games in 2008 would include additional instrument peripherals to compete against Rock Band. Guitar Hero World Tour was confirmed as in development following the announcement of the merger between Activision and Vivendi Games in December 2007. Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick announced on April 21, 2008 that Guitar Hero World Tour will branch out into other instruments including vocals. Guitar Hero World Tour includes drums and is packaged with a new drum set controller. A larger number of real-world musicians appear as playable characters, including the great Jimi Hendrix, Billy Corgan, Sting, and Ozzy Osbourne. Guitar Hero World Tour also features the creation of custom songs that can be shared with others.

On September 4, 2007, Billboard announced that the band Aerosmith was “working closely with the makers of Guitar Hero IV, which will be dedicated to the group’s music.” On February 15, 2008, Activision announced that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, an expansion game to the series, would be released on June 29, 2008.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is developed by Neversoft for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, while the Wii version of the game is developed by Vicarious Visions and the PlayStation 2 version is developed by Budcat Creations. The game features a track selection composed of 60% of Aerosmith songs, with other songs from Joe Perry’s solo work or artists that have inspired or performed with Aerosmith, including Run D.M.C. Also in the works: Activision’s 2008 SEC filings cited that they plan to release Guitar Hero: Metallica by the first quarter of 2009.

By all expectations Guitar Hero will once again be the number one selling computer video game of the year in 2008. The Guitar Hero phenomenon lives on!

Guitar Hero World Tour

In addition to all of the online gameplay modes from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero World Tour introduces Battle of the Bands mode which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band.
