Punk baby clothes are sweeping the nation, and there’s a reason for that – people are tired of boring old baby clothes that you can buy just anywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you spend a few dollars at a local chain retail store or a few more dollars at a higher-end boutique, because most of the baby clothes that you buy at either one of these places look basically the same. They aren’t ugly, and there’s nothing wrong with them, but they definitely aren’t punk. Most of them aren’t even that interesting. It seems like, even though fashion for adults has clearly been changing – and mostly for the better – fashion for babies has stayed the same.

Apparently every boy on the planet needs a baseball shirt with ‘daddy’s lil’ slugger’ written on it, and every girl needs something full of pink frills and butterflies. If you want to dress your child like that it’s fine, but what if you don’t? What if that kind of style just isn’t for you? What’s wrong with letting your little one go punk – at least where his or her fashion is concerned? Nothing, that’s what. There’s nothing wrong with it. But where do you find clothing like that?

You certainly aren’t going to just walk into a standard baby boutique or the baby section in a big store and find clothes with skateboards, skulls and crossbones, and punk rock symbols. You can still get punk baby clothes, though, online. It’s a great way to shop for them, since you won’t have the child’s grandparents clucking their tongues and shaking their heads while you’re looking at black onesies and other garments with skulls on them, or similar choices. You can shop in peace and choose what you like for your child instead of what society is trying to force on you at most retailers.

Choosing baby clothing is a very personal thing. This is your baby, and whether it’s your first or whether you already have been blessed with children, you want to take care of your child and keep him or her happy and healthy. In theory it won’t matter how you dress that child, because a baby is too young to know. But as your child gets a little older, he or she will begin to pay attention to what kinds of clothing is being offered and what kinds of clothing is being worn by his or her parents, too. It’s an important lesson in being true to oneself and one’s personality, instead of simply doing what everyone else is doing and has done forever.

Conformity is fine, but it’s not for everyone. If your family – including your new baby – fit into that mold, use the wearing of punk baby clothes to show that to the world. Make sure people understand that your baby is an individual, not just an extension of you and the rest of society, and teach that child from an early age that it’s ok to be yourself and that differences should be celebrated. Not everyone is going to grow up to wear a business suit and have a nine to five job, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Encouraging your baby in whatever he or she does as your little one gets older is the key, and the kinds of clothing that you wear and let your baby wear can actually have a lot to do with that. Punk baby clothes don’t send a bad message. They are cute, just like your baby, but yet they’re unique – and so is your child. Make sure you celebrate and enjoy that, rather than stifling it.
