Rockstar Clothing, An Overview

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

There are many definitions of the term “rock star” but all these definitions agree in one concept: a rock star is rich, most of the time attractive, and famous. What exactly does it take to be a rock star? What is it about them that attract us to want to become like them?

Rockstars are usually the leaders (in most cases, vocals or lead guitar) of a successful Rock and Roll band group. The stereotype of a rockstar is handsome, charismatic, creative, and adventurous. Their wardrobe consists mostly of t-shirts that are usually in the color black, denim jeans, and fanciful accessories such as spikes, leather straps, and belts. But this is the stereotype of the rockstar in this century. Years ago, the apparel of these lead musicians went through transitions of creative bursts of energy mixed with fabrics and colors. And what is the outcome of all this? Psychedelic patterns, bell bottom jeans, white pants, brightly printed t-shirts, leather jackets, and a personal favorite of mine, spandex. Who could ever forget Freddie Mercury (from the band Queen) running around stage, singing his heart out to “I Want to Break Free” in white spandex pants tucked into boots that were almost knee length? Now that took guts and bravery.

Rockstar ClothingThis is what being a rockstar is all about. Adventure. Rockstars aren’t made overnight. In the world of Rock and Roll, one must have something, a gimmick or a look, that sets him/her apart from all the rest. Because, let’s face it, there are several rockstars that are emerging for the darkness. But they have noticeable similarities such as the ever famous rugged look, the common t-shirt and jeans outfit that never ever seems to die, and of course, the screaming fans that follow them around almost everywhere. There is also the fans that seem to worship the very ground that these stars walk on. They follow the trends that they set, buy the copies of the clothes that they wear, and there are some that go to the extent of wearing the same stage make-up as their idols wear. Talk about support. The fashion sense of these musicians is simple but yet stands out in a way. There are even some members of Rock bands that go on stage with nothing on but a pair of hipster jeans, a black vest and a fedora hat. This promotes the saying “The less clothes on, the better” which was probably made to show off the chiseled abs and glistening bodies of these rock musicians. If of course, that is their cup of tea.

All in all, the apparel of the rockstars of today may not be unique but is still attractive and eye catching, even if it’s just a t-shirt with fancy printing on it. Though people say that the appearance of a person is not important, it actually is. For a celebrity to keep on being a celebrity, they have to be good, look good in order to stay at the top. It doesn’t seem like a big struggle but in a world where one day you’re in and the next you’re out, even the smallest of details can manage to keep these rockstars and their trends up their with the rest of the immortal celebrities for a very very long time.
