What would be a better investment? Bass guitar question?

I've recently joined a band, and I need to improve my bass either by getting a new one or replacing the pickups in my old one.

My current bass is some cheap thing i bought off ebay, ive been playing it for about 3 years, I love it but it sounds crap through my amp.

It would probably be easier to buy new pickups but i have no experience with switching the new and old pickups and wiring etc… so it would cost me extra to get it done properly

The pickups im interested in buying are roughly £150 (EMG P-J 5 string) and the basses im looking at buying are between £250 and £300
